Tree Service Costs in Dutchess County, NY

Typical ranges with sources, what moves a quote up or down, and what to ask before you book. Last reviewed: 29 October 2026.

Most tree service cost pages print a national average and then hope you stop asking. This page explains what really sets the price, so you can judge any quote in your hand.

Tree service cost in Dutchess County depends mostly on access, size, condition and what sits under the tree. For example, a tree a bucket truck can reach costs less than one over a roof or septic field. Shawn gives free estimates in person, so one visit turns a guess into a real price.

Why won't anyone quote a price over the phone?

Access changes the number more than size does, so a phone quote is mostly a guess.

Take a sixty-foot oak in an open field, for example. As a result, the bucket truck parks close, and the chipper sits a few feet away. Now put the same oak in a fenced back yard, leaning over a sunroom. Then add a septic field between the tree and the driveway. So the crew lowers every piece on a rigging line and carries each branch out by hand.

It is the same tree, but the job and the price are very different.

How much does tree service cost? Typical ranges

Typical ranges, not GXB's prices

No tree company publishes a Dutchess County price list that we could find. These ranges come from published cost guides, using New York figures (upstate and Westchester) where they exist and national guides otherwise. Sources are listed below, read 29 October 2026. GXB Precision Tree Care has not set its own ranges. Shawn gives a clear price at the estimate.

Each range assumes a truck can get near the tree. In contrast, tight access pushes a job toward the top of its range, or past it. Stump grinding is usually priced separately from tree removal.

Tree Removal

Roughly how tall is the tree?

Size What that means Typical range
Small Under 25 ft: ornamental, young growth $250 – $550
Medium 25–50 ft: typical yard tree $500 – $1,200
Large 50–75 ft: mature oak, maple, pine $1,000 – $2,000
Extra large 75 ft+: dominant canopy tree $1,500 – $3,500

Tree Trimming & Pruning

Roughly how tall is the tree?

Size What that means Typical range
Small Under 30 ft: ornamental, young growth $100 – $450
Medium 30–60 ft: typical yard tree $250 – $850
Large 60 ft+: mature oak, maple, pine $500 – $1,800

Stump Grinding

Roughly how wide is the stump?

Size What that means Typical range
Small Under 12 in across $100 – $150
Medium 12–24 in across $100 – $250
Large 24–36 in across $150 – $350
Extra large 36 in+ across $250 – $500

Other typical ranges

Stump grinding rule of thumb: $2 to $5 per inch of stump diameter
Many companies set a minimum of about $100. Stump grinding is usually priced separately from tree removal.
Stump and root removal: about $200 to $700 per stump
Often more than grinding. Treat it as an upper bound and ask the company what is included.
Land clearing, lightly wooded: $600 to $2,500 per acre
Brush and small trees. The tree count and the machine needed move the price.
Land clearing, heavily wooded: $3,300 to $5,600 per cleared acre
Large trees and stumps. Stump removal may be extra.
Dead or hazardous trees: add about 10% to 30%
One upstate New York company reports dead ash trees run 10% to 30% above a healthy tree of the same size. A crane can add $1,500 to $2,500.
Emergency and storm work: often 2 to 3 times a normal job
Most storm jobs fall between $450 and $3,000. A tree on a house is higher. Ask whether an after-hours premium applies.
Cabling and bracing: $150 to $450 per tree
More for large trees or several cables. This is the weakest figure here, from national guides only.
Tree planting, installed: small $100 to $300, medium $250 to $700, large (to 20 ft) $400 to $2,400
Guides do not say whether the tree itself is included. Ask.

Where these ranges come from

Each range is a plain summary of the sources below, not an average we calculated. We made no adjustment for the Hudson Valley. Prices change, so treat these as a starting point for comparing quotes.

What affects tree removal cost?

Access. Access is the biggest factor, especially near houses. Specifically, can equipment reach the tree, or does the whole job leave through a garden gate? Measure your gate before anyone quotes you, because a narrow gate keeps machines out.

Size and spread. Height gets the attention, but spread does the damage. For instance, a short, wide maple over three neighbors' yards costs more than a tall pine in the open.

What sits underneath it. For example, a lawn can take a dropped limb. However, a patio, a fence, a pool liner and a septic field cannot. Since rigging adds hours, everything the crew must protect raises the price.

Condition. Do not assume a dead tree is cheaper to take down, because it is often the opposite. Dead wood is unpredictable, so a climber cannot trust it. Instead, the crew may need a bucket truck or a crane to reach it safely.

Where the debris goes. Chipping and hauling the wood costs more than leaving it stacked on site. So ask whether keeping the wood as firewood lowers your price.

The stump. A removal price almost never includes the stump, so ask about it. Grinding it in the same visit keeps the cost down. However, a second trip for the stump grinder adds to it.

Why do tree service quotes vary so much?

Generally, the gap comes from three things: insurance, debris and the stump.

An uninsured crew really is cheaper, until a limb goes through your roof. Then the claim is yours, not theirs. So ask every company for a certificate of insurance before you compare prices.

Next, check whether the low quote hauls the debris or leaves a pile on your lawn. After that, check whether it includes stump grinding. Overall, those three questions explain most of the gaps you will see.

Questions people ask before they book

How much does tree removal cost in Dutchess County?

It depends more on access than on height, so no honest price comes from a phone call. A mid-sized tree in an open front yard costs far less than one in a fenced back yard. Published cost guides put a small tree at about $250 to $550, a medium tree at $500 to $1,200 and a large tree at $1,000 to $2,000, before access and stump work. Those are typical ranges, not prices set by GXB. Shawn gives a free estimate in person, with a clear price before any work starts.

Why is tree removal so expensive?

You pay for risk, equipment and skill, not for time on the clock. For example, a removal near a house is a controlled dismantle, with each section lowered on a rigging line. The bucket truck, chipper and stump grinder also cost far more than the saw.

Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?

Usually only when the tree has already hit something the policy covers, such as a house or garage. However, many policies decline to pay for a dead tree that is still standing. Read your own policy before you assume either way. Then photograph the damage before anyone touches it.

Is stump grinding included in tree removal?

Usually not, so treat it as a separate line on any quote. Removal takes the tree down and hauls it out, but the stump stays unless the quote includes grinding. Ask for it in the same visit, because a second trip for the stump grinder costs more.

Do you charge for an estimate?

No, Shawn gives every estimate himself, free and with no obligation to book. He looks at the tree, then tells you what it needs and gives you a clear price. If the tree does not need anything yet, he will tell you that too.

Why is one tree quote half the price of another?

Check what the low quote leaves out before you take it. In general, the gaps are insurance, debris haul-away and the stump. Without a certificate of insurance, a cheap crew stays cheap only until something goes through your roof. Then the damage becomes your claim.
