Yes, GXB Precision Tree Care does tree removal, trimming and stump grinding across the City and Town of Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie is two governments, and they do not share a tree law. The City sits on the Hudson, and the Town wraps around it in a crescent. So your address decides which code applies before a saw touches a tree.

The Town alone held about 45,000 people at the 2020 census, from New Hamburg on the river to Arlington. Routes 9, 44 and 55 cross it, while Wappinger Creek marks its line with Wappinger. Most homes sit on suburban lots, with mature shade trees over roofs, drives and service drops.

When a healthy tree grows too heavy over a house, crown reduction and structural pruning help. They take weight off without killing the tree. Ash, however, is a different story. NYS DEC says an infested ash usually dies within two to four years. So a dead ash near a house needs to come down.

Shawn's crew works from a bucket truck and uses a boom truck for cutting. On lots where shade trees hang over roofs, drives and service drops, that lets the crew lower limbs in pieces.

Places we work in and around Poughkeepsie

Arlington

Arlington is a neighborhood of about 3,000 people just east of the city line. The Arlington Central School District takes its name from it. Because it sits in the Town, Chapter 187's five-acre exemption covers most house lots here.

Spackenkill

Spackenkill is the hamlet south of the city, along US 9 and Route 113. It takes in informal neighborhoods such as Hagantown, Kingwood Park and Beechwood. Trees here mostly grow on suburban house lots, close to homes, drives and wires.

Red Oaks Mill

Red Oaks Mill grew up where Vassar Road, Route 376 and Route 113 meet. Wappinger Creek runs through its center and forms the line between the towns of Poughkeepsie and LaGrange. So a creekside lot here may answer to either town's code.

New Hamburg

New Hamburg is a riverside hamlet of about 840 people in the town's southern corner. It sits on the rocky point where Wappinger Creek meets the Hudson. With the railroad and the river along its edge, plan truck access before the crew arrives.

Local rules

Do you need a permit in Poughkeepsie?

In the Town of Poughkeepsie, usually not, if your lot is occupied and under five acres. Chapter 187 exempts tree clearing on an occupied residential lot of less than five acres. It also exempts trees that are dead, dying, diseased or damaged. So are trees leaning badly enough to threaten a structure, a road or a person. Genuine emergencies are exempt too.

Above five acres, the rule changes. A residential lot of five acres or more needs a permit before clearing. The approving authority is the Planning Board, rather than the building counter. The code counts a "tree" as eight inches DBH or more. You measure DBH four and a half feet up, on the uphill side. "Tree clearing" means felling more than 20% of the trees six inches or bigger.

The City of Poughkeepsie is a different government, with its own chapter and its own Shade Tree Commission. Do not assume a rule you heard from someone across the city line applies to you.

Tree service in Poughkeepsie: common questions

I live in the Town of Poughkeepsie on half an acre. Do I need a permit to take a tree down?

No, not on an occupied residential lot under five acres, because Chapter 187 exempts it. That covers most Town homeowners. Five acres or more is different, since it goes to the Planning Board. Inside the City, a separate code applies.

What counts as a "tree" under the Town of Poughkeepsie code?

Chapter 187 regulates trees eight inches DBH or greater. DBH means diameter at breast height. You measure it four and a half feet above the ground, on the uphill side of the trunk.

A storm dropped a limb across my driveway off Route 44. Do I have to wait for anything?

No. The code exempts removal in a genuine emergency to protect life or property, and trees already dead or damaged. If the limb touches a wire, stay clear and call Central Hudson first. Then call us to clear the drive.

Which Poughkeepsie neighborhoods are in the Town rather than the City?

Arlington, Spackenkill, Red Oaks Mill, New Hamburg and Rochdale all sit in the Town. Fairview straddles the Town and Hyde Park. If your tax bill says Town of Poughkeepsie, Chapter 187 is your code.

Do you grind stumps in Poughkeepsie too?

Yes. Stump grinding sits alongside removal, trimming, cabling and land clearing in our services. Tell Shawn at the estimate if you want the stump ground out, and he will price it with the tree.
