Hyde Park runs along the Hudson north of Poughkeepsie, with about 21,000 people at the 2020 census. Its river side holds the great estates, including the Roosevelt home and the Vanderbilt Mansion. Older lots here often carry large, mature shade trees.

That changes the default answer. On a tree like that, structural pruning comes first, and removal is the last call. Knowing which one you are looking at is most of the job.

The town also has a rule about street trees, and real money hangs on it.

Places we work in and around Hyde Park

Staatsburg

Staatsburg is a hamlet of about 700 people in the town's northwest corner, with the Hudson on its west side. Norrie State Park borders it to the southwest, and the Staatsburgh mansion sits in Mills State Park nearby. If your lot backs onto parkland, confirm the boundary before any cutting.

Hyde Park hamlet

The hamlet of Hyde Park sits on the west side of town, along the river and Route 9. Crum Elbow Creek marks its northern edge, beside the Vanderbilt Mansion grounds. Trees along Route 9 may stand in the highway right-of-way, so settle ownership before work starts.

Haviland

Haviland is a community in the southern part of the town, toward Poughkeepsie. Lots here fall under Hyde Park's code, so the street-tree liability rule applies. Just south, the Fairview area crosses into the Town of Poughkeepsie, which has its own code.

Local rules

Street trees and who pays for them

Hyde Park has a Shade Tree Commission under Chapter 28 of the Town Code. The provision to know is the liability one. Damage a street tree so badly it needs removal, and you owe the full cost of replanting. The same applies if you take one out without the Tree Commission's permission.

That is not a fine. It is the cost of putting the tree back. On a mature street tree, that is not a small number.

Do not let anyone take a tree near the road until you know whose tree it is. The line between your property and the right-of-way is not always where the lawn stops.

Tree service in Hyde Park: common questions

How do I know whether a tree near my road is mine or the town's?

You cannot tell by looking, because the right-of-way often extends past the pavement into what reads as lawn. Check with the town before removal. Hyde Park holds you liable for the full replanting cost of a street tree taken without permission.

Is my hundred-year-old oak worth saving, or is it time?

It depends on where the defects are, not on age. A large old tree can carry decay and still stand for decades, or it can be one storm from failure. We look at the unions, the root plate and what sits beneath it, then tell you plainly.

Are the ash trees on my Hyde Park property worth treating?

Sometimes, if the tree is still healthy and you commit to ongoing treatment. NYS DEC says ash make up almost 8% of the state's trees. Infested ash usually die within two to four years. A dead ash turns brittle fast, so removal gets harder the longer you wait.

My Staatsburg lot borders a state park. Can you take down a tree on the line?

Only once you know the tree is yours. Norrie State Park borders Staatsburg, and park trees belong to the state. If a park tree threatens your house, contact the park rather than cutting it yourself.
