Millerton is a village of about 900 people inside the Town of North East. It also sits near Taconic State Park and the Connecticut line. It formed after 1851 around the railroad and incorporated in 1875. The name honors Sidney Miller, the rail contractor who helped bring the line through.

The whole village covers only about 0.6 square miles, so lots are small and the street trees mature. Outside the village, however, the town opens into farmland and climbs toward the Taconic hills. Brace Mountain, at 2,311 feet, is the highest point in Dutchess County.

Places we work in and around Millerton

Irondale

Irondale is a hamlet northwest of the village, once home to the Millerton Iron Company. The ironworks opened in 1854 and employed about 150 people by 1882. Since it lies outside the village line, the Town of North East's zoning rules apply here.

Northeast Center

Northeast Center is a hamlet southwest of Millerton on Route 44. It lies outside the village, so town zoning, not village rules, governs work there.

Boston Corner is a hamlet on the northern town line, partly in Ancram in Columbia County. Check which county and town your lot falls in before you plan any clearing.

Local rules

Village and town, two sets of rules

Millerton is a village inside the Town of North East. Which rules apply depends on your side of the village line, but people get that wrong constantly.

We found no dedicated tree chapter in the Town of North East code. The town deals with trees through the zoning chapter rather than a standalone ordinance.

Near the state park boundary, also check who owns the tree first. Taconic State Park land is not yours to clear, but the boundary is not obvious on the ground.

Tree service in Millerton: common questions

My tree is right on the village line. Who do I ask?

Ask the village first, since village rules are usually the tighter of the two. If the tree is outside the line, the Town of North East applies instead. One phone call settles which applies and saves a lot of grief.

Can you work on a tight village lot in Millerton?

Yes, because small village yards just mean the tree comes down piece by piece on ropes. That takes longer than dropping it whole, but it keeps the house, fence and neighbors safe.

Are the trees along the rail trail my responsibility?

Almost certainly not, so do not cut them. A public body holds rail trail corridors, so a tree that looks like yours is often on theirs. Report a hazard to the trail managers instead.

Does the state park own trees near my North East property?

It might, if your lot borders Taconic State Park in the north of the town. Park trees are state property, so do not cut them without permission. If in doubt, a survey or a call to the park settles where the line runs.
