Pawling sits at the county's southeast corner, against Connecticut and Putnam County. The east and west sides run high and hilly, with the Great Swamp and Harlem Valley between. Observatory Hill tops out at 1,332 feet.

Most people live in the valley, along Route 22 and the Harlem Line, in and around the village. The Appalachian Trail also crosses the town, while the Pawling Nature Reserve runs along Hammersly Ridge. So wooded lots, ridge lots and wet valley ground all sit in one town.

Pawling's code also bans one practice outright on public trees, and we agree with it.

Places we work in and around Pawling

Village of Pawling

The Village of Pawling, about 2,000 people, sits at the junction of Routes 22 and 55. It holds the town center and the Pawling train station, and the Maybrook Trailway runs south from here. Because valley-floor lots here sit near the Great Swamp, wetland rules can come into play.

Quaker Hill

Quaker Hill is a hamlet on a twelve-mile ridge of the same name, near the Connecticut line. From 1926, Lowell Thomas kept it rural, selling individual lots and farms instead of developments. So trees on that high ground stand exposed to wind from every side.

Holmes

Holmes is a hamlet in the southwest of the town, renamed from Reynoldsville in 1898. Wonder Lake State Park and Whaley Lake Church also sit in the area. Where a lot borders state parkland, settle the boundary before any cutting.

Local rules

Pawling bans topping on public trees

The Town of Pawling Tree Board chapter makes topping unlawful as a normal practice. That covers any person, firm or department. It applies to any street tree, park tree or other tree on public property.

Topping cuts a crown back to stubs, ignoring where the growth points are. Despite the pitch, it does not make a tree safer. Weak regrowth erupts off the wound, and decay enters a cut the tree cannot seal. In five years you have a worse tree than you started with. Read why topping fails before anyone talks you into it.

The Tree Board can also order removal of an unsafe tree. The same goes for one damaging sewers, power lines, gas or water lines. So does one carrying an injurious fungus, insect or pest.

Tree service in Pawling: common questions

Someone offered to "top" my tree to make it safer. Should I?

No. Pawling bans topping on public trees, because it strips the growth points a tree needs. Weak shoots then sprout off the wound and put more weight on worse attachments. Instead, crown reduction done to standard brings the height down without the damage.

How fast can you get to Pawling in a storm?

Pawling is the far corner of our service area, so tell us plainly on the phone what is happening. A tree on the house moves ahead of a tree across a lawn. Anything touching a wire is a utility call before it is ours.

What do I do with a standing dead tree on a wooded lot?

Deal with it while it still has sound wood in it. Dead trees get worse to climb and rig every season as the wood goes punky. Away from any target, though, a snag has real wildlife value and can stay.

Does the topping ban cover the tree in my own yard?

The chapter covers street trees, park trees and other trees on public property. So your own yard tree is not on that list. Even so, topping harms a private tree just as much, so we do not recommend it.
