The Town of Wappinger sits on the east bank of the Hudson, with 28,216 people at the 2020 census. Its name comes from the Wappinger people who lived here. It holds three quarters of the Village of Wappingers Falls, plus hamlets such as Hughsonville, Chelsea and Myers Corner.

Sprout Creek forms its line with East Fishkill, while Wappinger Creek forms part of its northwest edge. The ground runs from sea level at the river to 545 feet in the south of town. So you get dense streets near the village and wooded lots along the creeks further out.

Town or Village changes which rules apply to you, but the boundary follows nothing obvious on the ground.

Places we work in and around Wappinger

Hughsonville

Hughsonville is a hamlet about a mile south of Wappingers Falls, named for William Hughson. Its Presbyterian church went up in 1840, and its fire company dates to 1912. It sits outside the village line, so village clearance rules do not reach it.

Chelsea

Chelsea is a small, mostly residential hamlet on the Hudson in the town's southwest corner. It was laid out in streets in 1812, when it was still called Low Point. So riverside lots here make access and drop zones the first question on any removal.

Myers Corner

Myers Corner is a community of about 10,600 people on County Routes 93 and 94. It runs from the edge of Wappingers Falls east to Sprout Creek, the line with East Fishkill. Its suburban lots put mature trees close to houses, drives and service drops.

New Hackensack

New Hackensack is a community of about 1,500 people in the northeast of the town, along Route 376. Hudson Valley Regional Airport also borders it to the west. Locally, this stretch of Route 376 still goes by New Hackensack Road.

Local rules

Town or Village? It matters

Three quarters of the Village lies inside the Town. Plenty of people are genuinely unsure which one they are in, and the rules differ.

The Village sets clearance heights you can measure yourself. A limb over a public sidewalk must sit at least eight feet above it. Over a public street, the minimum is thirteen feet. Village code also requires dead or incurably diseased trees to come down.

We found no dedicated tree chapter for the Town of Wappinger, though the Town does regulate timber harvesting. That law targets stream crossings, landings, haul roads and skid trails, with erosion and sediment control as the point.

Tree service in Wappinger: common questions

How do I tell whether I am in the Town of Wappinger or the Village?

Your tax bill is the quickest tell. A Wappingers Falls mailing address covers a much wider area than the village. If it matters for a permit, call the town clerk. So guessing from the address is unreliable here.

Do the eight- and thirteen-foot clearance rules apply to me?

They apply within the Village: eight feet over a public sidewalk and thirteen over a public street. Outside the village line, that code does not bind you. Even so, a limb hanging low over a road is still a liability worth clearing.

I am planning to harvest timber on my Wappinger property. Anything to know?

Yes, because the Town regulates timber harvesting around the operations that do the damage. Those are stream crossings, landings, haul roads and skid trails. Erosion and sediment control is the point. Talk to the town before equipment arrives.

Is Hughsonville in the village?

No. Hughsonville is a hamlet of the Town of Wappinger, about a mile south of the village. The village's clearance rules stop at the village line, so town rules apply there.
