Millbrook is a village of about 1,450 people near the center of the Town of Washington. It grew around a railroad stop that opened in 1869, between the older settlements of Mechanic and Hart's Village. The village incorporated in 1895 and today sits compact and heavily shaded.
The town around it is large, at about 59 square miles, with Route 44 across it. Meanwhile, the East Branch of Wappinger Creek runs through the middle. The 2,000-acre Cary Arboretum and Innisfree Garden both sit here, which says something about how the place values trees.
Big specimen trees on big properties are common here, so the work leans toward preservation. That means crown cleaning on mature hardwoods and reducing end weight on long limbs over drives and paddocks.
Removal still comes up here. Dead ash is the usual reason, because NYS DEC has confirmed the emerald ash borer in all but two New York counties. Most infested ash die within two to four years. A dead ash over a drive or paddock fence should come down before it fails.
On larger properties, Shawn's crew can put a bucket truck into the canopy over a drive and use a boom truck for heavy cutting.
Places we work in and around Millbrook
Mabbettsville
Mabbettsville is a hamlet on US 44, about two miles east of Millbrook. It is one of the most concentrated residential areas in the town, with a town park and ball field. Closer-set homes here mean more trees near houses than on the big estates.
Lithgow
Lithgow is a hamlet in the northeast corner of the town, on US 44 about four miles west of Amenia. It takes its name from Linlithgow in Scotland, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church stands there.

Local rules
What we checked
We found no dedicated tree removal ordinance for the Village of Millbrook. So for a normal residential removal, that means no tree-specific permit to pull.
Millbrook sits inside the Town of Washington, so town-level provisions apply outside the village line. Wetland and watercourse rules still apply wherever they apply.
Do not take a quiet code as permission to clear a stream corridor or road frontage without asking. Around Millbrook, the frontage trees are often the most valuable thing on the parcel.

Learn moreTree service in Millbrook: common questions
Can you save a declining specimen tree?
Yes, if the decline shows up while the crown is mostly intact. In that case, crown cleaning, reducing end weight and correcting past bad pruning all buy time. But once half the crown has died, you are managing a removal, not a recovery.
What is crown cleaning, and does my tree need it?
It is the selective removal of dead, dying, diseased and crossing branches, without changing the tree's overall shape. On a mature tree it takes out what would fall anyway. It also drops the load the tree carries in a storm.
We have long limbs over the drive and the paddock fence. What do you do about those?
Reduce the end weight rather than remove the limb. Shortening back to a side branch lowers the leverage on the union while keeping the tree's shape. Taking the whole limb off at the trunk costs the tree more than it needs to lose.
Is Millbrook its own town?
No. Millbrook is a village inside the Town of Washington, which also takes in Mabbettsville and Lithgow. We found no dedicated tree chapter for the village, and town provisions apply outside the village line.
