Red Hook keeps its trees on purpose. Both the Town and the Village run formal tree programs, which is unusual for places this size. Even the name points at trees, since it refers to red fall foliage by the Hudson.

The town held about 10,000 people at the 2020 census. It also has two villages, plus the river hamlets of Annandale-on-Hudson and Barrytown. Old estates line the river, while farmland and wooded lots fill the east. So wind crosses that open ground and hits the tree lines edging it.

Because the town's own plan names the national pruning standard, conversations about how to cut a tree stay short.

Places we work in and around Red Hook

Annandale-on-Hudson

Annandale-on-Hudson is the river hamlet in the northwest of the town, and Bard College owns most of it. Still, a few private homes sit among the campus and state conservation land. The hamlet lies inside the Hudson River Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Barrytown

Barrytown is a hamlet of about 100 people south of Annandale, also inside the Hudson River Historic District. Most of its houses went up in the mid to late 1800s, often for workers on the river estates. It also holds three notable estates: Edgewater, Massena and Rokeby.

Upper Red Hook

Upper Red Hook is a small hamlet on US 9, north of the village. It sits outside the village line, so the Town's Chapter 128 sets the rules here, not the village program.

Red Hook writes ANSI A300 into its own plan

The Town of Red Hook adopted Chapter 128 in 2008, creating the Red Hook Town Tree Preservation Commission. The Supervisor appoints its seven members after consultation with the Conservation Advisory Council.

Its Community Forestry Management Plan also has to state current arboricultural practice. It names ANSI A300 and the standards DEC recommends for Region 3. ANSI A300 is the national standard for how to make a pruning cut. That is also why a properly pruned tree does not look topped.

The Village runs its own Community Forestry Program under a separate chapter. Trees get periodic inspections, and a certified arborist recommends trimming, cabling or removal. The Town designates the last Friday in April as Arbor Day.

Tree service in Red Hook: common questions

What is ANSI A300, and why does it matter for my tree?

It is the national standard for tree care practice. It covers where a cut goes, how much crown comes off and how to brace a limb. Red Hook also names it in its own forestry plan. Cuts made to it heal, while careless cuts leave lasting wounds.

The village inspected a tree on my street and recommended cabling. What does that involve?

Cabling installs a flexible support between limbs to take load off a weak union. It especially suits trees with co-dominant stems or included bark in the seam. It can buy a good tree years, but it is not a fix for a decayed trunk.

Do I need village permission to prune my own tree in Red Hook?

The village program covers street and public trees, but not your backyard. If your tree stands near the road, check whether it sits in the right-of-way first. That decides whose tree it is, and who has the final say.

Does the Town tree commission cover Annandale and Barrytown?

Yes, because Annandale-on-Hudson and Barrytown are hamlets of the Town of Red Hook, outside both villages. So the Town's Chapter 128 is the relevant law, while the Village program covers village trees only.
