Does your town change the job?

Yes, and often more than people expect, because each Dutchess County town writes its own tree law. For example, a neighbor four miles away can face completely different rules.

Here is what actually differs, town by town. We read each line from that municipality's own published code. Each town page also carries the chapter it came from.

Where What is different there
Town of Poughkeepsie The code counts a "tree" as eight inches DBH or more. Occupied residential lots under five acres are exempt from the clearing permit.
City of Beacon A permit from the Building Inspector, a plot plan showing every tree, those trees marked with ribbon or paint, and a Certificate of Insurance naming the City as holder.
Town of Fishkill A permit for any tree eighteen inches in diameter or more.
Town of Hyde Park Take out a street tree without the Tree Commission’s permission and you are liable for the full cost of replanting it.
Village of Wappingers Falls Limbs must clear a public sidewalk by eight feet and a public street by thirteen. Dead or incurably diseased trees must come down.
Town of East Fishkill A written permit to cut any tree over four inches on a regulated steep slope.
Town of Red Hook The town plan names ANSI A300 (the national standard for how a pruning cut is made) and the standards DEC recommends for Region 3.
Village of Rhinebeck Only trees within thirty feet of the road centre line are covered. The route runs Clerk, then Tree Commission, then Board.
Town of Pawling Topping any public tree is unlawful as a normal practice. That rule is worth reading before anyone offers to top yours.

Most of the rural towns have no dedicated tree chapter at all. Those include LaGrange, Pleasant Valley, Clinton, Milan, Stanford and Union Vale, for example. However, that is not the same as having no rules. Wetland, watercourse and steep-slope provisions still apply. Larger clearing can also pull in site plan review, whatever the tree chapter says.

We checked all nine entries on 8 September 2026. Codes change, so confirm with the municipality before work begins.

What is the same in every town?

The insurance question stays the same, because it does not change at a town line. If you check one thing everywhere, check that.

For example, Beacon will not issue a tree permit without a Certificate of Insurance naming the City as holder. Elsewhere the same check makes sense, even though no code writes it down. If an uninsured worker suffers an injury on your property, the cost can land on you.

So do not let anyone start work on a verbal promise. Instead, ask for the certificate in every town, every time. Besides, it costs you nothing, and a company that has one can send it quickly.

Likewise, the standards do not move. For instance, Red Hook writes ANSI A300 into its own plan. A300 is the national standard for how a crew makes a pruning cut. So it applies to a tree in Amenia exactly as it does in Red Hook.

How do I choose a tree service near me?

Start with proof, not proximity, because the nearest company is not always your best option. After all, in a county this size, the difference in drive time is minutes, not hours.

Ask for three things before you book. First, get a certificate of insurance. Then get a written estimate that lists what the price covers and what it leaves out. Finally, ask whether the stump and the debris are in the price. The gaps in a cheap quote are nearly always those two.

After that, ask about the tree next to it. A company that only answers the question you asked is selling you a job. In contrast, one that mentions the ash behind it, thinning from ash borer, is looking at your property. That is the difference you are paying for.

Common questions about our service area

What towns does GXB Precision Tree Care serve?

We serve 23 towns across Dutchess County, New York, working out of Poughkeepsie. The full list is Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, Beacon, Hyde Park, Hopewell Junction, LaGrangeville, Pleasant Valley, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Millbrook, Pawling, Amenia, Beekman, Clinton Corners, Dover Plains, Milan, Millerton, Pine Plains, Stanfordville, Union Vale, Tivoli and Wappinger. If your town is not on that list, call and ask rather than assuming.

Is there a tree service near me in Dutchess County?

Yes, we are based in Poughkeepsie and work across the whole county from there. So the practical question is not distance but access, because the equipment has to reach the tree. Then call with your town and a short description of the tree.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Dutchess County?

There is no single county-wide answer, because tree law here is municipal. For example, Beacon, Fishkill and the Town of Poughkeepsie each set their own permit thresholds. In contrast, several rural towns have no dedicated tree chapter at all. Also, the table on this page shows what differs, and each town page cites its code.

Do you charge to come out and look?

No, the estimate is free, and Shawn comes out to give it himself. Then he tells you what the tree needs and what the work will cost. If it needs nothing yet, you will hear that too.

Do you cover towns outside Dutchess County?

Ask, because the county line is not a wall. Some jobs just over it make sense, while others do not. Generally, the size of the job against the distance decides it. We would rather say no on the phone than pad a quote to cover the drive.

Which town am I actually in?

Many people get this wrong, and it changes which rules apply. For example, Tivoli sits inside the Town of Red Hook, and Millerton inside the Town of North East. Also, three quarters of the Village of Wappingers Falls sits inside the Town of Wappinger. So if you live near a village line, check before booking rather than after.
