Hopewell Junction is a hamlet near the center of East Fishkill, just north of Fishkill Creek. It began as a railroad junction, since three lines met here. Today the Empire State Trail runs through it, so the Dutchess Rail Trail and Maybrook Trailway meet here.

The wider town is big, at about 57 square miles and nearly 30,000 people. Many neighborhoods sit among wooded lots, so big native trees often stand close to roofs. Interstate 84, the Taconic Parkway and the Appalachian Trail also cross it.

East Fishkill also regulates trees in a place most people never think to check: on slopes.

Places we work in and around Hopewell Junction

Stormville

Stormville is a hamlet in the eastern part of the town, named for early settlers Jacob and Rupert Storm. Leetown sits above it on top of Stormville Mountain. For that reason, the four-inch steep-slope permit matters most on mountain lots like these.

Wiccopee

Wiccopee is a hamlet near the western town line, and it takes in the Fishkill Hook area. It went by Johnsville from about 1800 to 1904. Like the rest of East Fishkill, it falls under the town's steep-slope rule.

Shenandoah

Shenandoah, or Shenandoah Corners, lies in the south of the town near Interstate 84 and the Taconic Parkway. The Appalachian Trail also passes close by. Where a lot borders trail land, find the boundary before anyone cuts.

Local rules

Steep slopes change the rules in East Fishkill

East Fishkill requires a written permit to cut a tree over four inches in diameter on a regulated steep slope. Four inches is a small tree, so on flat ground nobody would think twice.

However, the code treats tree removal under a forestry management program as an exempt activity.

If your lot drops away behind the house, check the slope's status with the town before you clear anything. Slope rules exist for a reason, though. Strip what holds a hillside together, and a tree problem becomes a drainage problem.

Tree service in Hopewell Junction: common questions

I want to clear brush and small trees on the slope behind my house. Does the town regulate that?

Quite possibly. East Fishkill requires a written permit to cut trees over four inches in diameter on a regulated steep slope. That threshold is far lower than most people expect, so check with the town before clearing.

There is a big oak leaning toward my roof. Does leaning mean it is failing?

Not by itself, because plenty of trees grow with a lean and stand for decades. What matters is whether the lean is new. Also look for soil lifting on the far side of the root plate and cracks at the base.

Do you handle several trees at once on a wooded lot?

Yes, and it usually costs less per tree than three separate visits. When Shawn comes for the estimate, walk the whole property with him. Bundling the work into one trip is where the saving comes from.

Is Hopewell Junction a separate village with its own rules?

No. Hopewell Junction is a hamlet inside the Town of East Fishkill, not an incorporated village. So the town's code, including the steep-slope permit, is the one that applies.
